CNN VS The New York Times

Today, we put two journalism’s head to head, a battle of information and journalism. In other words, who of these two large scale News Corporations is better at giving information and variety in their stories. The New York Times, a news industry thats been in our nation since 1851, as well as winning 125 Pulitzer Prizes(which is still the most prizes won by a single company to date). CNN a newer company of 1980 starting in Atlanta GA, going as far to be the first 24 hour televised News broadcasting center. Both, are top tier players in both national and international news. The real question is which is superior? The older company that’s stuck to their work since the mid 1800s? Or a newer company keeping up with it’s predecessors? CNN, owner by Turner Broadcasting System a branch of WarnerMedia & AT&T, so unlike some they never were a truly independent channel or news distributor which to some is an immediate push away for some. Meanwhile, the New York Times or NYT was a more self run or started organization, being owned by the Sulzberger family since it’s founding in 1851. Which can be a magnetic force to some who prefer to support industries self started. However, while The NYT has done a lot of great stories, articles, and so on. They have had some blunders, Daily Signal’s: 5 Biggest screw-ups by the NYT points out the larger blunders of NYT/their Journalists. Which when both they called themselves out or they were brought to light by others, it was a heavy blow to their credibility. Some of these as well as similar incidents were this year even. Misinformation, or entirely false information can and has ruined not only News companies, but other kinds of companies as well. Luckily they rebounded back from these and other incidents fairly quickly, but the scar is still there. Meanwhile, as far as I could tell, any CNN mishaps were quickly fixed if not covered up. Now these two have a con and a pro on both their sides. CNN having a head start to technology l;Ike television and the internet. While NYT has been around for many years, even without a television program or channel yet still holds strong. Both of these “News Co. Giants” seem to have a near endless future. Who is superior you may ask? Well, that’s for you to decide. Who is superior in diversity in stories, in quality over quantity, etc.

Reflection of blogging

So far my blogging experiences have been unique. Being able to blog about subjects whether assigned or personally made, I’ve been able to give my piece on subjects, to critique, to look at the details, and above all to be able to give my spin of words about it. Which has a certain ring or hold to it, with the missing body and face the sort of self-made persona too it. Though that goes for all of the internet really, a place where people can act nearly however they please. With little too no repercussions, on here I can speak my mind without having to feel fully judged. I feel the man on the screen being judged, like a storybook character you’ve written to be criticized, at most. Not saying I will or have said anything that would cause mass displeasure among the PC (Politically Correct) community. But I can feel far less restrained on what I want to say or how I would say it. It’s a very freeing experience, to be able to speak or critique something without major friction. I may never say anything that’ll ever become a light to a match nor do I think anything I’ve said in past will eventually. But that’s the thing with the worldwide web, it gives anyone and everyone a chance to speak. Even if what they say or throw up is nothing but incomprehensible nonsense, or words turned to knives solely to irritate and to cause pain upon others. But for those who simply give their own piece in a non-vile or volatile manner, the internet is an amazing place. I’m uncertain whether or not after this project within school or even within my years left in this school whether or not I’ll continue this blogging here or elsewhere. But, the experiences thus far have been at the very least or bare minimal a decent experience.

journalism critiquing

These 5 journalism stories will be critiqued today, some professional, others school newspapers/blogs. Some you may already read, first up is Wasilla High School’s “Battlefeild Cross Mewmorial” on Wasilla High’s YouTube channel is short 19 second video, explaining it’s new monument. (https://youtu.be/DcfviCv7pnE). The video of the monument is simple and short, but clarifies the 5 W’s of journalism: the Who, the When, the where, the why, and the what. The monument is built in front of Wasilla High, for a previous graduate of 1982 Ronald J. Hemenway, who later joined the Navy but in the terrorist attack on the Pentagon on 9/11 he had died. However the only when that isn’t particularly mentioned in the video is when the monument was erected, or unveiled. Meanwhile on Frontiersmen they give those specific dates

Wasilla‘s: Battlefield Cross

Next is Viper Times, the online newspaper of Verrado High school, their story on: Verrado’s Picasso by Kameryn Walker on November 5th of this year. The article goes over how greatly their art program has grown over the past 10 years. As well as how seniors of their school named, Amanda Heimbach, Cheyenne Deporter and junior Katelynn Brock, on how they love the elective, recommend it to others who need the art credit.(Art being a mandatory credit within their high school) Thus going over the 5 W’s:

  • The Who: Amanda, Cheyenne, Katelynn
  • The When: published; November 5th the program; has grown over the past 10 years. however it was unspecified when these interviews took place, moreover because there wasn’t a specified date the story was based upon.
  • The What: Verrado High’s Art Program
  • The Why: There isn’t much of a why, other than to promote the art program’s strength
  • The Where: Verrado High school

Next is the Washington Posts’s article on: recently discovered N. Korean missile bases, putting doubts on the summit between Trump and Kim Jung Un. By Adam Taylor, on November 12th at 1:29 PM. Going over a report from the Washington Think Tank, saying information gained from defectors and satellites shows a dozen missile bases were found about North Korea, at first bringing up the fear it brings as well as raising the question if Kim Jung Un, is keeping “his end of the deal” during the previous Summit in Singapore. Interviewing nonproliferation expert Jeffrey Lewis saying, he hasn’t broken any promises but is making due on them, by mass nuclear weapon production. One base is only 84 miles from S. Korea’s Seoul. It isn’t completely clear whether or not some of these bases are producing nuclear weapons that can be fitted onto missiles yet. It then goes over Howe N. Korea has no nuclear deals set, only to end testing and mass production of missiles. This Article has all 5 of the Journalism’s W’s. As well as extensive interviews, description of information and sources, and more.

Now for a story that caught the eye of this Blogging Bandit. On BBC written November 12th, Steam bug that allowed unlimited free downloads, a bit of information I wish I had known about, before it was removed. A security researcher named Artem Moskowsky, had found the bug and reported it to Steam. In which they rewarded him with $20,000. The article continues on how this bug could’ve been(since their records show it wasn’t used) or has used, exploited, and so on. As of now however, the bug has been patched (for now). This story has its who; Artem and Valve co./Steam, the when being posted or published the 12th of Nov. However when Artem had told Valve or when it was patched wasn’t disclosed, the Where also being Steam or to be more generally speaking online, the what being the bug itself, the only W missing is the why, since there isn’t much of a why question within the story.

To end this upload, these critiques, the final story is one many of us know today. The passing of Stan Lee on azcentral.com, written by Brian Truitt of USA Today, at 12:10 PM MT on Nov. 12th. As any star, whether in music acting, or comic books its talked about in the media greatly. The article goes on to talk about his career, including quotes from various people in POW! or other industries he was involved with. Soon after going through his past, both in his co-creation of Marvel’s biggest heroes as well as his title in WW2 “Playwright”. They even go into some of his appearances in the many Marvel movies. This article has its 5 W’s, and goes into further detail as well as more stories and details that most people may not have known up until reading this article. Res in peace, Stan Lee.
